Approximately 10-15% of the population suffers from some form of phobia. So, if you have any form of -fear and phobias, you’re not alone.
When fears are irrational and disabling, they are called phobias.
Fear can be very useful. It is often a signal to protect us from immediate harm. A phobia on the other hand can be very crippling. A phobia is a fear (or sometimes a feeling of disgust) that is so strong, you feel intense panic, to the same level as if your life was being threatened.
Phobias can be specific or complex. Specific phobias tend to develop around an object, animal, situation or activity and usually develop during childhood or adolescence.
Examples of these are:
- Animal phobias- dogs, spiders, etc.
- Environmental phobias– heights, lightning, deep water and germs
- Needle phobias– doctors, dentists, blood
- Sexual phobias– such as performance anxiety or fear of a sexually transmitted disease
Examples of complex phobias are:
- Social phobia
- Being alone
- Being in crowded places- eg: supermarket
Some specific phobias may not have a very large impact on people’s day to day lives, simply because they don’t come across their triggers too often.
Eg: someone living in the city who has a phobia about snakes.
Other phobias can have quite a significant impact on someone’s life.
Eg: someone who has a fear of flying, but needs to travel as part of their job.
Often, someone with a phobia will simply choose to live with it, but take great care to avoid any situations that may lead to an episode. Phobias can be a learned response that someone develops early in life from a parent or sibling, it can be associated with a traumatic incident, and there may even be a genetic component to it.
How hypnotherapy can help you overcome your phobia
All phobias can be successfully treated and cured. Hypnotherapy can help reprogram your minds reaction to the trigger. This can help you regain control of your life. When the unconscious mind is accessed, patterns can be altered, programs redirected, underlying causes discovered and conditioned response to a certain stimuli eliminated.
Through hypnotherapy you can learn how to respond differently in certain situations. The reaction to a stimulus resulting in a phobia is a learned response. This response exists in our unconscious mind. If this is a learned response, then it can also be unlearned and replaced with a more empowering and life sustaining response.
That is the main role of hypnotherapy when dealing with phobias. All phobias can be overcome by the use of hypnosis and practicing your newly learned skills.
