Depression is a serious illness that affects our physical and mental health. Depression is now the leading cause of non fatal disability in Australia. Research suggests that up to 50% of the population will experience some form of depression during our lifetime.
The human mind can only cope with so much at any given time and when all the coping mechanisms have been used up, the brain can go into overwhelm. Depression can be the brains response to overwhelm in some cases.
Depression is often related to chemical imbalances in the brain. Most of the medications that doctors prescribe for depression can have some negative side effects. As anyone who has battled depression knows, medication doesn’t always help. It has its place, but until the underlying causes are dealt with and effective coping strategies put into place, then you can’t really move forward.
How hypnotherapy can help you overcome depression
The most common form of therapy for treating depression is cognitive behaviourial therapy. This is essentially, the conscious mind challenging the validity of the sufferer’s negative inner dialogue, or self talk, so after a while, those negative messages become less powerful.
Recent studies have shown that hypnotherapy can be a more effective therapy when it comes to treating depression. Hypnotherapy can potentially work faster than CBT, because of its ability to access the unconscious part of the mind.
Depression can lead to a vicious circle of negative thoughts, such as guilt, worthlessness and hopelessness. Without help, this vicious circle can be very hard to break free from. Our thoughts largely create our experiences, so the only real way to break free from these disempowering patterns is to change our thoughts.
These negative patterns reside in our unconscious minds and hypnotherapy can access those parts of the mind where the negative patterns are and help to create newer more empowering patterns. This can be achieved over time.
As a result of these new thought patterns, new responses can be implanted into the unconscious so when you experience what was formerly a painful trigger, a new response can be accessed.
Sometimes depression can be triggered by a painful or traumatic event from our past. Hypnosis can bring those into conscious awareness, which can then be released and from there a newer and more empowering response be implanted and practiced.
