Many of us gamble, but exactly what is a gambling addiction? Gambling has been part of our Australian culture since this country was settled. For most people, it’s simply an enjoyable activity, because they can control their behavior and are prepared to spend only what they can afford to lose.
A gambling addiction however could be described as the urge to frequently gamble despite any negative consequences, or a desire to stop. Then the addiction has control of you and your life is not your own.
There is often an emotional attachment to the gambling. It’s possible for the gambling activity to start out as a form of occasional entertainment, but it can potentially progress to an obsession, fairly rapidly.
Often, the belief with the problem gambler is that continued gambling will solve their financial problems. Of course, this virtually never happens. One of the major reasons people continue to gamble can often be because there is something that they are not happy with in their life. It could be unresolved emotional issues, trauma, stress or even boredom.
Some common symptoms of a gambling addiction are:
- Constantly thinking about gambling
- Lying to family and friends
- Asking others for money so you can gamble
- Using gambling as a way to escape life’s problems
- Being unable to stop, even when it puts your job, relationship etc at risk
It’s a difficult compulsion to live with, but it can be helped.
How hypnotherapy can help you overcome your gambling addiction
Addictive gambling always has an emotional component attached to it. This can be a very powerful trigger. As these triggers reside in the unconscious mind, hypnotherapy can uncover some of these triggers. When these triggers and emotions are uncovered, thought patterns are recognized and can then be changed, to produce better results.
By uncovering some of your inner resources, these can help you create the new outcomes that you want. The “Gambling bug” can be something as simple as a feeling of excitement or power.
Hypnotherapy can allow you to experience some of those feelings, but change the behavior. This is done through the unconscious mind. Once those alternatives are recognized and put into place, change becomes much more workable.
