Most people overeat every now and then and it’s not uncommon to sometimes feel you’ve eaten more than you needed to.
Binge eating however, involves eating very large amounts of food over a short period of time, but having no control whilst eating. Binge eating is often done in private and can sometimes be linked to depression and possibly even self-harm in some cases.
Feelings of guilt, shame,self-disgust and depression are common, following binge eating episodes. Binge eating episodes can often occur when you feel sad, lonely or bored.
As a consequence of that, food then becomes a form of medication, usually taken to numb out the pain.
From my dealings of clients with binge eating issues, the most common theme seems to be the lack of control, coupled with a lack of awareness. People have often use comments such as: “I didn’t realise how much I had eaten, till I noticed the packet was empty.”
Or words to that effect.
Awareness is always the first step in creating change. Practicing techniques such as mindfulness when eating can help a lot and significantly increase awareness.
From binge eating to Controlled Eating by Hypnotherapy
Once the awareness is there, change can begin. With greater awareness comes greater control. The feelings of being out of control whilst eating don’t tend to have the same impact, or ferocity, because the awareness kicks in earlier.
The programs and patterns that are causing the binge eating episodes exist in the unconscious part of the mind. By the use of effective hypnotic techniques, these patterns and programs can be altered and changed to create better outcomes and move from the binge eating mindset to controlled eating patterns.
Of course, modifying the behavior is only part of the answer. During the course of the hypnotherapy program, root causes can be uncovered and dealt with in a nurturing and compassionate manner.
The initial cause of the pain driving the binge eating behavior is often buried in the subconscious. Not only can hypnotherapy change patterns, also techniques such as
- Mindful eating and chewing
- Breathing techniques
- Emotional awarenessimplanting alternatives
- Recognizing triggers
can all help you move from binge eating back to controlled eating. These techniques are all part of the process, which can not only initiate the change, but they can help you maintain the change longer term
